Children’s television continues to dominate and evolve across Canada. From how children consume content to the kinds of programming they’re watching – the industry of children’s television is changing rapidly.

Experts will discuss navigating the current children’s television landscape across Canada. From challenges and emerging opportunities for funding and creating to the significance of diverse storytelling within children’s programming. Featuring recent Canadian Screen Award nominees and winners, Khalihah Brooks, Richard Young and Tyra Sweet (moderator), these creators will share the knowledge of their respective journeys working in animation and short-form live-action.

Khalilah Brooks | Producer

Khalilah Brooks, executive producer and creator of *Aunty B’s House* on CBC Kids and CBC Gem, recently celebrated her show’s success with 7 Canadian Screen Award nominations and two wins, including Best Lead in a Children’s Youth and Animation Series and the Shaw Rocket Fund “Kids Choice Award” in 2024. With over 20 years in children’s entertainment, she is also the founder of BAM Children’s Entertainment Inc., a children’s author and producer. Her impactful work has been featured on Etalk Daily, the National, OWN, and CityTV. Khalilah’s achievements include the Canadian Small Women’s Business Award and widespread media recognition.

Richard Young | Screenwriter/Actor

From a South Asian (Indo-Caribbean) background, Richard Young is a Canadian Screen Award-winning screenwriter and actor. Children’s Television writing credits include “Dino Ranch” (CBC/Disney+), “Overlord and the Underwoods” (CBC/Nickelodeon), “16 Hudson” (TVO) and “Miss Persona” (Treehouse). Other screenwriting credits include the digital series “Sudden Master” (OMNI/KindaTV) and the dramatic short “Maternal” (CBC Reflections, CarribeanTales International Film Festival – Best Short). His sci-fi thriller “Exalt” was optioned by Frantic Films, and his writing accolades include Coverfly RED List, ScreenCraft Sci-Fi and Fantasy Screenwriting Competition Finalist/Honorable Mention, JFL ComedyPRO Pitch Finalist and Austin Film Festival Screenplay Semifinalist. Tyra Sweet | Writer, Producer, & Director

Tyra Sweet is a multi-award-nominated Writer, Producer, and Director, best known for her work as a Host on YTV’s “The Zone.” She has written over 30 episodes of children’s live-action and animated television, earning two Canadian Screen Award nominations for Best Writing in the Preschool category. Most recently, Tyra directed on the second season of “The Fabulous Show with Fay & Fluffy” and served as an associate producer on Hulu’s “Davey & Jonesie’s Locker.” She is a graduate of the BIPOC TV & Film Kids TV Writing Bootcamp and The Second City Sketch Conservatory.
