The Union Cooperative Initiative (UCI) is a non-profit solidarity cooperative building an economy that works for all. We lead the development, incubation, and operation of union cooperatives that are good for people and the planet.

In the Spring of 2023, the UCI partnered with the Canadian Animation Guild (CAG), IATSE Local 938 to create a new animation union cooperative project. The animation cooperative was launched to provide flexible work opportunities to freelance animators through the delivery of animation services with partner organizations.

Under the direction of the Animation Cooperative Organizer & Developer, the UCI is seeking an Animation Director/Producer to join the cooperative network. The successful candidate(s) will work independently and as a part of a team.

The Animation Director / Producer will assist in the execution of animation projects with partner organizations. Their duties include the development of project pitch documents, presentations, quotes, and preparing project budgets.

Workers should have access to the tools, programs, and the work space necessary to complete this project. Some resources are available by request including access to office space located in Vancouver, BC.

  • 5+ years of animation or film industry leadership experience;
  • Experience leading and development of budgets on commercial projects;
  • Strong understanding of technical animation principles and capabilities;
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to articulate and communicate ideas;
  • Organized, solution-oriented, and strong attention to detail;
  • Possess the ability to focus despite pressure and tight deadlines;
  • Able to work effectively in a team setting with a strong work ethic;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to adapt quickly to meet production changes.

Experience working with the labour union movement or with cooperatives is an asset.

Although this position is a part of a team, this work is primarily self-directed under the supervision of a Union Cooperative Organizer & Developer. The successful candidate(s) requires strong time management, scheduling and organizational skills.

The UCI is a living wage employer and our minimum rates are tied to the living wage rate for regions across British Columbia. Wage rates are collectively bargained with our partner unions and include payment in lieu of additional extended benefits. We call these fringes.

Fringes are made to support freelance workers and to recognize the true cost of living in BC. This is one of the ways we put our worker-centred values at the core of our work. Animation Workers at the UCI are covered under the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Animators Guild, IATSE 938.
