SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Under the general supervision of the Executive Producer, the Producer develops and produces animated or digital projects in accordance with Studio priorities; cultivates relationships with accomplished and emerging talent; manages all creative, administrative and technical stages of production and post-production for a portfolio of projects; builds relationships with industry and cultural partners and seeks other funding sources, as required; negotiates and prepares all agreements and documents required for project deliveries, in collaboration with the Business Affairs team; collaborates as required with Marketing and Distribution on launch/outreach strategies and activities; manages special projects as required.
- Initiates the development of new projects.
- Researches subject areas with interesting potential.
- Evaluates the content, form, style, ethics, social relevance and potential impact of project ideas and proposals.
- Manages all creative, administrative and technical stages of production and post-production, including but not limited to researching, scripting, identifying creative teams, negotiating fees and contracts for freelance production staff, budget preparation, scheduling, shooting and artwork creation, editing, music composition, sound design and editing, online, mixing, technical quality (picture, sound) approvals, and internal communication and collaboration with Technical Services, Marketing, Distribution and Legal Affairs.
- Manages the production of language versions.
- Approves closed-captioning files and previews credits for Executive Producer approval.
- Develops and closely monitors, in close collaboration with the Studio Administrator, production budgets and schedules (pre-production, production and post-production).
- Flags for the Studio Administrator any potential shifts in production schedules that could impact fiscal year spending.
- Controls the production expenses of projects; brings all proposed budget revisions to the attention of the Executive Producer.
- Regularly consults with the Studio Administrator to ensure that NFB regulations, procedures and the provisions of contract agreements and collective agreements are observed.
- Negotiates and oversees the preparation of all relevant legal documents and agreements in collaboration with the Legal and Business Affairs department.
- Manages rights clearances for own productions in collaboration with the Distribution team.
- Collaborates with key creators and Marketing, Festivals and Distribution colleagues in the development of marketing strategies, as required.
- Responsible for seeking production financing from outside funding sources when needed.
- Responsible for collaborating with co-production partners in creating financing strategies and seeking production financing when needed.
- Hires and supervises freelance production staff and ensures that the provisions of NFB agreements/regulations and collective agreements are observed, including employment equity policies.
- Collaborates in performance appraisals of NFB staff assigned to own productions.
- Oversees special projects, as assigned.
- Participates as required in relevant forums, seminars, conferences and festivals.
- Keeps abreast of industry trends and best practices (international, national and provincial).
- Contributes to the overall development of NFB and English Program priorities/objectives.
- University degree in related discipline;
- Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in the production industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Excellent knowledge of the creative, technical and administrative production processes for animation;
- Excellent knowledge of script and storyboard development, pre-production, artwork creation and post-production; experience in preparing, managing and controlling budgets and production schedules and in hiring creative, technical and administrative staff;
- Ability to analyze a project, proposal or script and assess its scope, costs, artistic, social and cultural aspects and distribution potential; good knowledge of the Canadian and international media industries and strong relationships within the production community;
- Demonstrated aptitude for analyzing complex social, artistic, cultural, economic and political questions and stimulating discussion among creators around these issues;
- Strong knowledge of funding programs and financing structures for animation and other media within Canada;
- Excellent understanding of project and budget management;
- Proven communication and negotiation skills;
- Strong ability to take initiative, be pro-active and work independently;
- Fluent in English, both orally and in writing.
Recognized in the field for competencies and personal qualities such as aesthetic sensibility, capacity for critical thinking, creativity, good judgment and leadership, and known for having worked with outstanding creators on high-quality projects.
