Workshop dates: November 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2026
Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society presents Intro to Analog: Bolex 16 Series, a four-session workshop series focused on learning how to use the Bolex 16mm film camera.
Led by Vancouver-based experimental film, video, and installation artist Christoph Runné, the hands-on series gives participants the opportunity to work in small teams and experience the analog filmmaking process from shooting through to projection.
Throughout the series, participants will learn how to:
- Operate a Bolex 16mm camera and become familiar with its features and controls
- Properly load and handle 16mm film
- Measure light using a Sekonic light meter and understand exposure
- Plan and shoot footage collaboratively
- Process exposed film at the Cineworks Analog Resources Lab (CARL)
- Experience finished footage projected on 16mm film
The series concludes with a group screening in Cineworks’ Black Box Studio, where participants will see their work projected directly from film.
No previous filmmaking experience is required.
A few weeks after the series concludes, participants will receive a digitized copy of their footage.
Participants who complete all four sessions will also receive a complimentary weekend Bolex rental, with film purchased separately. The rental is valid for up to one year following the fourth session and is subject to equipment availability.
