Organization Description
Elia Kirby Productions Ltd (EKP Ltd), dba the Great Northern Way Scene Shop (GNW), provides production services and scenic fabrication for cultural and corporate projects. GNW works on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ/sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. GNW is dedicated to supporting Metro Vancouver’s cultural community while providing employment to local artisans and craftspeople.
Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the Director of Operations; provides support to Project Managers; works in collaboration with lead positions, such as the Director of Production, Heads of Departments, and Leads; and works with the Director of Operations to align daily shop floor logistics with organizational strategies and safety protocols.
Work Performed
- Ensure the facility remains clean, organized, and functional for daily operations.
- Oversee warehouse operations, ensuring efficient material storage, inventory organization, and workflow coordination.
- Supervise grips/labourers in the safe and efficient operation of the scene shop, warehouses, and production activities.
- Collaborate on the transportation activities of the shop with the Crewing & Logistics Coordinator and the Director of Operations.
- Manage the safe handling and disposal of shop waste.
- Train and supervise new workers in company operations, industry best practices, and health and safety protocol and procedures in collaboration with the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Recommend work measures to improve productivity and shop efficiencies.
- Keep shop equipment, vehicles, and machinery running smoothly by managing a regular maintenance schedule.
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations on facility safety compliance, equipment maintenance planning, and the implementation of strategic production workflows.
Exercising Judgement / Impact of Decisions
The incumbent is responsible for the smooth and safe production practices at the main and off-site locations. The consequences of errors include: EKP Ltd. and client projects could run at a serious resource and financial deficit, and the staff and production personnel may be seriously injured in unsafe working conditions, seriously compromising the organization’s ability to operate.
Working Conditions
GNW is currently located at 281 Industrial Ave, Vancouver, BC, and this position is based there. The scene shop potentially exposes employees to working conditions that include: working at heights on scaffolding and/or on a ladder, and/or in a high-reach aerial lift; fumes or airborne particles requiring the use of a respirator; working with or around paint/solvents/aerosols, such as spray paints; using a motorized company vehicle or a leased or personal vehicle for company business; working in non-weather conditions that may be wet or humid, in extreme cold or heat; working with or near compressed gas cylinders or tanks; working with or near toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous chemicals, fluorescent lamps or batteries; exposure to loud noise levels; and outdoor weather conditions, including direct sunlight, wind, and rain.
Qualifications
- High school graduate.
- Must be able to supervise staff and function well in a collaborative environment.
- Knowledge of production and employment standards, practices, and procedures in the entertainment and construction industries.
- Knowledge of warehousing practices.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Agile decision-making and advanced organizational skills.
- Able to work well on a deadline in a fast-changing environment.
- Related post-secondary training, and/or equivalent experience.
- Competency in project management components, including budget and timeline management, scope management, and risk management.
- Proficiency in Google Workplace.
- Experience in the field of technical theatre and/or fine and performing art manufacturing management an asset.
- Knowledge of building materials and material procurement is an asset.
- Professional experience as a Scenic Carpenter, Scenic Painter, Technical Director, or Production Manager an asset.
- Experience in tool maintenance, repair, and shop operations an asset.
Employment Terms & Remuneration
This is a permanent full-time position, at 40 hours per week. Shop hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The hourly wage range for this position is $30.00–$36.00, plus the opportunity to enroll in the group benefits plan after a successful three-month probationary period.
