BC is one of Canada’s busiest production centres and what’s needed is sustained support for filmmakers building original visions and sustainable careers. As a response, beginning in 2026, the Institute expands VIFF’s commitment beyond the fall festival, transforming its development programs into a continuous model for creative growth, professional training, and international connection for emerging and established equity-deserving filmmakers and screen creatives across the country.
Applications are now open for three inaugural cohorts:

Animation Cohort – Supporting independent animators exploring author‑driven, experimental, and visually distinctive work.

Documentary Cohort – For filmmakers advancing bold, hybrid, and socially engaged approaches to nonfiction.

Creative Business Cohort – For producers and creative leads building sustainable careers without compromising artistic ambition.
